Wake Windows by Age: The Chart That Actually Explains Your Baby's Naps

If you've ever put your baby down for a nap "because it was nap time" and gotten 12 minutes of sleep followed by an hour of crying, you've felt the gap between clock-based schedules and what your baby's body is actually ready for. Wake windows — the amount of time a baby can comfortably stay awake between sleep periods — are a far more reliable guide than the clock alone.
Wake windows by age (newborn to 24 months)
- 0–6 weeks: 30–60 minutes
- 6–12 weeks: 60–90 minutes
- 3–4 months: 1.5–2.5 hours
- 5–6 months: 2–3 hours
- 7–9 months: 2.5–3.5 hours
- 10–12 months: 3–4 hours
- 13–18 months: 3.5–5 hours (often shifting to one nap)
- 19–24 months: 4–6 hours
These ranges are starting points, not rules. A baby's ideal wake window depends on overnight sleep quality, temperament, and how many naps they're currently taking — a baby who slept poorly overnight may need a slightly shorter wake window the next morning, not a longer one.
Why wake windows explain more than a fixed schedule
Sleep is driven by two systems working together: circadian rhythm (the body's internal clock, tied to light and darkness) and sleep pressure (the buildup of tiredness since the last sleep). A fixed nap schedule assumes sleep pressure builds at the same rate every day — but it doesn't. Wake windows let you respond to the sleep pressure your baby actually has today, which is why they tend to produce longer, more consistent naps than the clock alone.
How to use wake windows to fix short naps
If naps are consistently short
Short naps are most often a sign of being put down too early (not enough sleep pressure built up) or too late (overtired and overstimulated, making it harder to settle into deep sleep). Try adjusting the wake window before the short nap by 15–20 minutes in one direction for a few days and watch what changes.
If bedtime is a battle
An overtired baby at bedtime is often the result of a wake window that ran too long across the whole day, not just the last stretch before bed. Look at the full day's wake windows, not just the final one.
Wake windows aren't the whole story
Wake windows are one input among several — hunger, environment, developmental stage, and overnight sleep debt all interact with how long a baby can comfortably stay awake. That's exactly why generic charts only get you part of the way: the right wake window for your baby today might be different from the chart average, and different from what it was last week.
